How learning UX Design makes me a better human being

I recently facilitated a video shoot for one of our political office holders. During the pre-event equipment set-up and test run, we had a minor issue — the clock on the wall was ticking too loudly and the sound got captured by the microphone, hence the vendor/production crew took it down.

The event organiser and production crew were thinking about what to do with the clock, where do we put it, is it ok if we put it in another meeting room?

I was surprised that everyone in the room collectively turned around and looked at me when I suggested taking out the clock’s battery.

This was when I realised how much I have grown personally since I embarked on my User Experience Design journey about 4 years ago.

Learning User Experience Design has taught me to listen, empathise and understand user’s pain points, take a step back to see the bigger picture, analyse the problem and come up with a feasible solution that balances both user and business needs. I have also become more observant of my surroundings and solution-oriented.

As human beings, we tend to overthink and overcomplicate things. Be it facing a problem at work or in our lives, or people’s kindness and friendliness when someone reaches out to us. Always keep an open mind and keep things simple.
